To understand how Five Oars Coffee Roaster (FOCR) came about, we first have to go back to our roots in 2013. The current FOCR team banded together and started out a little coffee place along Upper Thomson Road, called Oz Coffee. From the very beginning, we are all dedicated to serving only the very best for our customers, be it rain or shine.
Fast forward to where we are now, our presence has grown significantly in the coffee industry. We realised that we need to move our humble abode to a place big enough for our customers to enjoy their daily cup of joe.
The team took inspiration from the original “Oz Coffee” name and came up with the word “Oars” in FOCR (it sounds like Oz). The word also illustrates how we are all on the same boat, picking up our oars and rowing forward together. The word “Five” came in because 5oz is the volume of our regular cup of coffee. Hence, on June 2018, FOCR officially opened its doors, signifying the start of our adventure to build an empire of our own in the coffee industry.

- What is the name of your business and when was it incorporated?
The name of our business is called Five Oars Coffee Roasters. It was incorporated in June 2018.
- Where is it currently operating?
It is currently operating as a café in 39 Tanjong Pagar Road. However, this has not yet been publicly announced, but we are working on an exciting new project in Asia Square which is targeted to open in mid-June this year.
- Who are your target audience? (Please specify)
Our target audience is mainly young adults ranging from the ages 18 to 30, who enjoy hanging out in their local coffee joint. However, a significant percentage of our patronage comprises of tourists, white-collared workers with offices within the area, and families on weekends.
- List your products and services, and price range.
Our main mission is serving up a quality experience to our customers, without just solely relying on the physical environment of our establishment. We pride ourselves in our specialty beans that are roasted with care in-house, so that we have maximum control over the taste. We have a dedicated and skilful team of baristas on the floor daily to ensure that our coffee is well-calibrated to bring out its unique flavours. Not only coffee, we also provide alternatives such as chocolate drinks, tea selections, craft beers etc.
Our kitchen specially curates a unique spread of aesthetically-pleasing, “perfect-for-brunch” dishes for our patrons. Each dish is fit for any occasion, be it for sharing, light-eating or lunchtime peak hours. Our kitchen operates into the night as well to provide a casual dining experience for our guests in the evening. Drawing inspiration from European fare, with dishes like the Duck Gnocchi and Duo of Duck, it is a great spot for a date night.
Our price range for our beverages starts from S$3 to $12. Our price range for our food starts from S$17 to $27 for the brunch menu, and $17 to $29 for the dinner menu. A full menu is attached to the e-mail as well for your reference.

Our customers love our outlet’s aesthetic design, especially with the botanical feature at our outdoor-seating area. They love the simplicity of the place, with minimalist elements and use of neutral colours. Many enjoyed our coffee as well, with our roasted beans on sale too at our retail section.

- What makes you different from your competitors?
Five Oars Coffee Roasters provides our customers with a complete dining experience – it can be a café where you catch up with friends over coffee and cakes at our outdoor seating area; or it can be a romantic date night with your partner over comfort fare without breaking the bank. Our establishment is built in a way that it can cater to your needs, no matter the purpose.
We take our aesthetic design very seriously as well, from minute details of using uncommon garnishes for our dishes, as well as following a minimalist design concept throughout the entire shop.

We do not have any sales promotion, but as mentioned above, we’ll be working on an exciting project in Asia Square, set to be launched in mid-June. This might be a highlight to anyone within the area, as it will be very interesting!
